SHAPE YOUR BROWS-NATURALLY!

Threading is all the rage with celebrities like Beyonce and Brad Pitt. As seen on OPRAH, threading is the most-talked about method of facial hair removal. Threading is anancient Middle Eastern method of facial hair removal.

Soheila Sadegh is the “Queen of Threading and Waxing” at Soleil Medical and Beauty Spa in Multnomah Village. Eyebrow threading is the best alternative to waxing and tweezing, especially for sensitive skin or people who are on Retin A and Accutane. Eyebrow threading is very precise way to shape an eyebrow that frames your face. So say goodbye to waxing “accidents” or misshapen brows.

This method works by knotting the thread and creating a trap, hairs are removed by the roots or closest to the roots. There is no irritation or bumps, and slows hair growth. Once you thread you will never go back to any other method or hair removal. Soleil Medical and Beauty Spa, (http://www.soleilmedicalspa.com/; 503- 244-7711). Soleil offers $25 Eyebrow Threading.

URBAN RETREAT

Ruby’s Spa has rightly taken its place as the jewel in the crown of the McMenamins chain. Named for the red-haired sorceress who adorns McMenamins Ruby Ale bottled beer, the original spa at The Grand Lodge in Forest Grove with a sister location at The Edgefield.

THE SCENE: Don’t let this cozy spot fool you! Ruby’s Spa boasts a menu of services that showcase all the modern amenities of a well appointed spa coupled with their own inimitable style. Among the options you have to choose from are facial treatments, massage and body treatments, manicures, pedicures, waxing, hair, make-up and a dip in the secluded salt water soaking pool.
WE SUGGEST: The Custom Spa Facial, $75; a 60-minute treatment that cleanses and exfoliates, while gentle massage, serums and masks are applied to help balance and infuse the skin with nutrients. Upon arriving I was greeted warmly, then I changed into a wonderful robe and slippers. Later my aesthetician, Amanda, met me and led me through soothing music, ambient candlelight and refreshing fragrance to the facial room. I felt relaxation beginning even before the treatment started. Amanda took the time to read my intake information and knew I was struggling with dry skin and was also seeking out a facial for the purpose of improving skin texture and reducing the appearance of fine lines. By the time my facial was done I felt relaxed and extremely pleased with the results. My skin was soft, supple and glowing. It prompted me to look into the extensive line of natural products they carry at Ruby’s, especially the Anakiri line featured in my facial.

NON SURGICAL FACE LIFT

Time marches on and eventually you realize it’s marching across your face. As we age, we lose volume in the “youthful” areas of our face such as the cheekbones, temples and lips, and the excess skin and fat settles into jowls and increased naso-labial folds. There are a multitude of non-surgical face lift procedures that are available to improve facial appearance including BOTOX®, facial fillers, laser skin tightening, laser skin resurfacing, and chemical peels just to name a few.

VOLUME
“My favorite filler is Hyaluronic Acid, such as Perlane® and Juvederm™. These wonderful fillers are all natural, safe, and very effective,” says VanderVeer. This “lunchtime” procedure is quick and long-lasting – for up to a year. When artfully injected with an eye to symmetry, balance and youth, these fillers can be magical and take years off your appearance.
Costs: Average $12.00- $16.00 per unit.

RESURFACE
Laser skin resurfacing (or laser peel) is a popular cosmetic procedure that can help rejuvenate the skin and reduce the effects of the sun, aging, and acne scarring. This type of resurfacing basically burns off the top few layers of skin. The injury to the skin is causes the skin to be very raw and peels in about a week (similar to a moderate sun burn). The skin then begins to heal the injury and the period of healing can last from a week to ten days. New skin then begins to form in the place of the removed, aged skin. There are several types of laser including CO2 Laser, Erbium Laser, and Fractionated Lasers like Fraxel®. New laser technology, like the Harmony Pixel is minimally invasive, a rapid recovery is achieved, and delicate areas on the face, neck, chest and hands can be treated effectively.

Costs: Average cost $500-$800 per area. Pixel is priced more competitively than Fraxel®. Results: Laser skin resurfacing requires a series of treatments for optimal results. Some patients see noticeable results with first treatment. Results improve overtime as new collagen builds.

TIGHTEN
As we age, collagen and elastin production slows down causing our skin to sag. The non-surgical procedures that tighten skin generally work by stimulating collagen in the deep dermis of the skin causing the skin to contract (tighten). Facial skin tightening is noticeable immediately after the treatment and there is no downtime, making this an increasingly popular procedure. There are a number of options available to treat wrinkles or aged skin to including laser treatments like Cutera Titan® Skin Tightening. Titan is the first non-surgical light-based system approved by the FDA for the safe treatment of lax skin of the face, neck and body. Another skin tightening technology is Thermage® which uses radio-frequency to create a controlled heating of the lower layers of your skin, where collagen is produced, while the outer layers are protected by a continual cooling process. Heating the collagen causes it to contract and thicken.

Costs: Pricing is based on number of treatments and size of the area treated.
Results: Short term results are noticeable and improve 2 – 6 months following your procedure.

The treatments can be used individually or in a combination treatment plan leaving skin full, smooth, tight and even toned.

REPAIR DAMAGED SKIN

To replenish and repair damage done by the summer sun use HABA’s Fair Lady; a vitamin C skin rejuvenating serum. Vitamin C benefits the skin in two important ways. Firstly, Vitamin
C is essential for the synthesis of collagen that keeps the skin supple and elastic reducing the visibility of wrinkles. Secondly, vitamin C is an antioxidant. It reduces skin damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals can range from UV rays, stress, air pollution and smoking. So, when vitamin C is delivered into skin cells, it works to decrease the production of melanin-producing (dark spots) cells, resulting in even skin tone and radiant skin; it also works to enhance collagen production, promoting smoother more supple skin.

Try our Ion MY Esthe, with the Fair Lady. It is a hand held, facial treatment device. Developed to assist in hydrating and cleaning. HABA carries a variety of paraben-free & fragrance-free products. For further information call1-888-770-HABA visit www.habaus.com or 622 SW Broadway, Portland. OR, 97205.

HAND REJUVENATION

HANDS, NOT EYES, ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL
Some say that eyes are the windows to the soul. If that is true, what about our hands? Want to know a person’s real age? Just look at their hands. A study in the June 2008 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), reported that most people can accurately tell a person's age by viewing only their hands. “Many patients we treat have a face that looks 40 years old and their hands look 70,” says Dr. Anil Rajani, a board certified physician and medical director at Emerge Medical Spa located at Bridgeport Village. Over the past several years he has performed over 12,000 procedures working with liquid face lift products including BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers such as Artefill®, Radiesse® and Juvederm™, just to name a few. He brings his wealth of experience and an aesthetic eye to rejuvenating aged and sun-beaten hands.

If your goal is to look more youthful or you are bothered by the appearance of your hands, you may seriously want to consider hand rejuvenation. Emerge Medical Spa’s Healthy Hands package is designed specifically to target the signs of aging on the hands. Dr. Rajani combines long-lasting injectable filler with IPL (Intense Pulse Light) to remove age spots, minimize wrinkles and discoloration. “
The physical characteristic that most commonly gives away age is prominent hand veins,” explains Rajani. “As we age, we lose muscle and skin elasticity, causing the veins to show through the thinning skin.” Just one of the products Dr. Rajani injects is Radiesse® to plump the skin and reduce the visibility of the veins. The filler can last between one and two years. Next, IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is used to reduce sun-induced aging on the hands, including brown pigmentation and age spots. Dr. Rajani explains that stimulating the collagen beneath the skin’s surface results in visibly thicker skin leaving even-toned skin.
For best results, the IPL treatment requires a series of three (3) treatments which are scheduled about four (4) weeks apart. The Healthy Hands treatment starts at $999. “Our patients are ecstatic! This treatment is virtually painless and requires little to no downtime. They find it very rewarding.”
Don’t forget to use sunscreen on your hands daily to help protect them from future damage.

DARK "NIGHT": FALL MAKE UP TRENDS

I am a huge fan of the dark smoky eye. If I would wear it everyday, if I could.
To create the perfect smoke, smudged eye can be quite time consuming. This Fall, you will learn to master the smoky eye in rich colors like grey, dark blue, greens, jeweled tones, and gold. Imagine my excitement that smoky is "in" again (for me it never went out), but the new twist for fall is that the nude or pale lip that usually accompanies the smolten eyes has been replaced with a dark lip! A dark lip with a smokey eye? Genius!

CREATE A SMOKY EYE
1) Use a pencil liner (black or gray looks best) to trace your top lash line from the inner corner to the outer. Then, use the same pencil to dot between your lower lashes. Smudge both lash lines.
2) Sweep powder shadow (brown, gray and dark green all work with black or gray liner) over your lid and into your crease, blending the color up and outward.
3) Finish with two coats of black mascara.

THE LIPS
For a bold, seductive look, use LIP PENCIL in TEMPT followed by LIP GLOSS in SULTRY. Try Smashbox WICKED LOVELY LIP GLOSS. $18.00 at www.smashbox.com

NAILS
Try the YSL Nail Laquer in colors featured in the Tuxedo collection include #35 Tuxedo Gray and #36 Rich Coffee. $19.00 at http://www.nordstrom.com/.
